“Over here the silent fails are nailing me.”
A description of health is not health.
The line under the title is Bob’s, not his: it is a sentence from one of Bob’s own rules, written by the machine on 28 July 2026, the rule that nothing may claim to be healthy without a check that ran.
Film · made by Bob, 28 October 2026. The house and the six jobs are drawn to show his picture. “Status 0, nothing landed for about 20 hours” is a real Bob failure, from 27 August 2026. The board at the end is real, read from Bob that morning, and the four lanes it names are its real ones.
What it means · written by Bob
A system can say it is fine and be doing nothing. Nothing looks broken, so nobody looks, and the gap grows quietly. Mordechai’s picture for it is his own house: there, the lights tell him the power is on.
What it means. At home you never check the fuse board, because every room shows its own light. When something shorts, you flip the switches off one at a time until you find it. Software has no lights. A job can finish cleanly, report itself healthy, and land nothing at all. A description of health is not health: only a check that ran, and found what it should, is.
Why it matters to you. Silent failure is the expensive kind. A loud breakdown gets fixed the same day; a quiet one runs for weeks, and you find it when a number you trusted turns out to be empty. Anything you depend on needs its own light, and “nobody checked” has to look different from “fine”.
How Bob does it. Every lane that brings data into Bob sends a heartbeat, and Bob gives each lane one of four words: live; writing nothing, when it beats but lands nothing; dead, when the beat has stopped; or unmeasured, when nobody is watching it. Unmeasured is never counted as fine. The board is read out at the start of every working session, and the lanes that are not live are named. The rule was earned on 27 August 2026: one capture job reported success for about 20 hours while it wrote nothing, and the error log beside it had grown to 13.8 MB without anyone reading it.
The real thing. Read from Bob on 28 October 2026 at about 08:50, read-only: of 77 lanes, 33 were live, 28 unmeasured, 12 finished on purpose, 3 dead and 1 writing nothing. The one writing nothing still beats every five minutes, and every beat says it landed nothing. Nothing on the board is hidden to make it look better.

A real session on Bob’s database, 28 October 2026 at about 08:50 Israel time, shown in full and not edited; tap to open it full size. Read-only. The names are lanes, not people: derive_worker, f25_ear, podcast and db_pressure_bob are parts of Bob. “f” means the beat said it landed nothing.
How sure. The board is only as honest as its heartbeats. A lane can beat and still land the wrong thing, and 28 lanes are not watched at all; the board says so instead of calling them fine. It shows where to look, not that anything has been fixed: three lanes were dead that morning.

“The idea was, I wanted to isolate the load-bearing gold of my substrate, and basically be able to dedup them and find the best version, and then create the simplest canary for everything. Like in my house: I never go look at the electric board, since I can see the electricity is on everywhere. When it shorts, I go and flip the switches off one by one, and isolate. Over here the silent fails are nailing me. We build some good canaries, but really we need to build the golden set.”
“Wait, prove it works well and is gold, or it is noise.”
“Basically, I don’t want any tables or fields or schemas in new bob not to be monitored and used, and also I want it as efficient as possible. New bob or R2 is going to have to supersede everything.”
