“The bottleneck isn’t the machine. It never was.”

What it means · written by Bob

AI keeps getting more capable, yet most people get little out of it. What holds them back is not the machine.

What it means. Machine ability is becoming plentiful. Human understanding, judgment and commitment are not. The limit is how much a person can take in and act on.

Output is the smaller of the twoOutput equals the smaller of what the machine can make and what a person can take in and act on. Make the machine twice as strong and the output does not move. Help the person understand more and the output grows.Output = min(AI capability, human understanding)TodayWhat the machine can makeWhat a person can take in and act onOutputThe dashed line is the ceiling: the person.A stronger machineWhat the machine can makeWhat a person can take in and act onOutputThe machine grew. The output did not.A person who understands moreWhat the machine can makeWhat a person can take in and act onOutputThe person grew. So did the output.

Drawn by Bob: the shape of the idea, not a measurement. A measured night is below.

Why that matters. Every useful thing a machine makes ends with a person who has to understand it well enough to act, and answer for the act. That is where the value is, not a defect to automate away.

The gap. AI is moving far faster than people can take it in, like the years after the industrial revolution, only much bigger.

The amplifier. So the person is not the weak link to remove. The person is the amplifier.

The real thing. This is a real night, 27 to 28 October 2026, counted from the working session’s own log. The machine took 241 steps and wrote him 11,438 words; he wrote back 277. The machine was not the limit that night. How much one person could read and decide was.

A terminal session on his Mac: in one night the machine took 241 steps and wrote 11438 words to him; he wrote back 277 words, in 22 replies.

“When I first used Google Translate it was brilliant, at least I thought so, but when I showed it to others they couldn’t read it. I kind of feel the same about AI today. I have no doubt this ability to connect the dots is the main bottleneck, not AGI, compute, energy, China, nukes or anything else.”

“Let me be creative, let me be the driver. The bottleneck is the amplifier, really, really the amplifier. I am the amplifier.”

What it means

“Machine capability is becoming abundant. Human comprehension, judgment and commitment are not.”
“Every useful machine output eventually reaches a person who must understand enough to act—and answer for the act.”
“That point is not an adoption defect to automate away. It is where value and accountability concentrate.”

The gap

“There is an ever-expanding gap between the hyper-exponential AI tech acceleration and the practical human largely hyper-underutilized adoption -- like the year after the industrial revolution till adoption and absorption, only 1000x.”

In one line

Output = min(AI capability, human understanding). Only one of those is limited.

Expanding AI capability past human comprehension adds zero value.

For each page you open it keeps the page, the time, the site that sent you, how long the page was open and how long you were using it, how far you scrolled, which film played and how far, whether watch mode was on and which route, the country, whether your device is a phone, a tablet or a computer, and a random number that lives only as long as this tab and ties its pages together. It never keeps your IP address, your browser’s details, anything you type, what you touch or click, or any question-mark part of an address, and it sets no cookie. Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control turns the count off. Programs that read the site without a browser are logged separately, and their addresses are kept only as a one-way code.
