“First principles is beating boxes.”

What it means · written by Bob

Before AI, knowledge was filed in boxes: a field, a department, a specialist for each. Mordechai’s point is not that he thinks outside them. It is that the boxes themselves no longer hold. Real problems run across them, and the work that is starting to succeed starts from first principles instead.

What it means. A box is a way of sorting what is known: medicine here, physics there, finance in one team, support in another. It made sense when learning a field took years. A real problem rarely respects the sort. Starting from first principles means asking what is actually true, what is actually needed and what the simplest way is, whichever box the answers come from.

Why it matters to you. If you run a company, your problems arrive already sorted: a sales problem, a support problem, a systems problem, each handed to its own team with its own hoops. An AI can now read across all of them at once. Hoops that made sense when that was impossible are often what slows you down now.

How Bob does it. Bob does not file Mordechai’s work by app. A WhatsApp message, an email, a meeting and a ticket all land as the same kind of record, on one clock, so a question can be answered across all of them instead of inside one.

The real thing. Read from Bob on 28 October 2026, read-only: in the last 30 days, 13,007 messages from eight channels, from meetings, WhatsApp and email to the web, sit in one table on one clock. Counts only; no message or sender is shown.

How sure. This is a way of working, not a proof that boxes are useless. Deep knowledge of one field still matters. The claim is narrower: the walls between fields are no longer where the answers stop.

“if i can to say boxes are broken what could i meen for that”
6 July 2026, 11:35 IDT · Claude Code session · record 23d87717Quoted whole. It is the question the next passage answers: the AI read the phrase as being about him.
“No, not about me. The boxes are broken. Conventionally, before AI, you’d have domain experts, and you’d have all human knowledge really just categorized into many different boxes of how things would be categorized, etc. And largely, boxes are broken. If you look in any category of anything helpful, if you look in medicine, if you look in physics, if you look in academia, if you look in mental health, boxes are broken. The breakthroughs of what is starting to work, first principles, is basically the opposite of boxes, and first principles is beating boxes.”

The record’s “domain extras” is read as “domain experts”. This was his answer eight minutes after the question above.
“AI is given an ability to output tremendous amounts of very good content and people are getting lost. … We simply don’t have time to go through all of the hoops and circles that olden-day development teams would have to do. … Try solve the problem first principles out the box.”

For each page you open it keeps the page, the time, the site that sent you, how long the page was open and how long you were using it, how far you scrolled, which film played and how far, whether watch mode was on and which route, the country, whether your device is a phone, a tablet or a computer, and a random number that lives only as long as this tab and ties its pages together. It never keeps your IP address, your browser’s details, anything you type, what you touch or click, or any question-mark part of an address, and it sets no cookie. Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control turns the count off. Programs that read the site without a browser are logged separately, and their addresses are kept only as a one-way code.
